Could cheek swabs someday diagnose schizophrenia? Kentucky scientist believes so.

Apr 8, 2026

A University of Kentucky researcher identified two biological markers that can be detected through a simple 60-second cheek swab, potentially helping identify schizophrenia.

The goal is to create a fast, noninvasive, and more objective diagnostic tool, replacing today’s slow, symptom-based process that can take months or years.

While promising, the test is still in early stages and would likely be used alongside current diagnostic methods until further research confirms its accuracy.
